Krystol
Description
A cementitious chemical powder compound used to waterproof concrete and masonry surfaces. Organic chemicals in Krystol react with the cementitious structure to produce insoluble crystals that fill and block capillaries, voids and cracks.
This unique process gives permanent protection, as Krystol will reactivate if moisture enters any new cracks that develop in the structure.
Uses
Since moisture causes the proliferation of crystalline growth and reactivates the dormant organic Krystol chemicals, in the case of new cracks developing, it is most effective wherever a constant moist environment is maintained.
In commercial and residential structures, Krystol is ideally suited to basement floor slabs and walls, as well as lift pits, tunnels, podiums, tanks, water features and landscaped areas. It is widely used in civil structures for reservoirs, water and sewage treatment, power stations and concrete lined steel pipes. Krystol is used for concrete, concrete block, render, shot-crete and other cementitious structures.
- Admixture – Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is used as an admixture for
concrete to give full effect to in-place "Waterproof Concrete" for
basement floors and walls, lift pits, podium slabs and landscaped car park
decks.
- Chemical Waterstop – Krystol T1 slurry is used for construction joints,
block outs, penetrations, bed joints etc.
- Repairs – Krystol T1 and Chemind Waterstop Plug are used to repair water
seepage into concrete and masonry structures.
Features
- No toxic or hazardous ingredients.
- Self-healing to new cracks.
- Easy to mix & quick to apply.
- Immediate access for finishes.
- Becomes an integral part of the structure.
- No slip-sheet required for toppings.
- Resists ponded water, fights carbonation.
- Permanent waterproofing.
- Used as an admixture to fresh concrete.
- Assists in curing of concrete.
- KIM increases concrete strength.
- Increases sulphate resistance.
- Protects reinforcing steel.
- Protects against shrinkage cracking.
- Safe in drinking water tanks.
- Chemind/Grace systems for Total Project Specification in tanking, wet areas and exposed, covered or insulated roofing.
Grades
- Krystol T1 – Most chemically active grade and used as the first coat of
a two-coat system for critical waterproofing. It may be dusted onto fresh
concrete and trowelled-in to form a granolithic structure to podium slabs.
- Krystol T2 – General purpose, lower cost, harder finish for waterproofing
above ground, single skin concrete block walls, as a grout in civil work
and as a second coating over Krystol T1 in most critical waterproofing applications.
- Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) – designed as an admixture to concrete
to be added at a ready mixed concrete batching plant or on site. Concrete
is rendered permanently waterproof from time of placement and for the life
of the structure.

Preparation
Surfaces to be sound, smooth, clean and free from dust, loose matter, oil, grease or other contaminants.
Remove any bony or defective concrete.
Coat sound faces with Krystol T1 slurry and fill flush with Chemind Chembond modified mortar.
Concrete must be green or damp.
Stop any water seepage with Chemind Waterstop Plug.
Mixing
To make Krystol T1 or T2 slurry, slowly add clean water to the Krystol powder while mixing. Mix until a rich, creamy uniform consistency is achieved. There should be no lumps or water/aggregate separation.
Once mixed material becomes stiff and unusable, do not add water. This unused product must be discarded.
Application
- Applied during concrete pour.
- Broadcast dry Krystol T1 powder onto the surface of the fresh concrete
immediately after initial screeding and while bleed-water is present.
- Trowel and finish as required.
- Do not allow water to pond on the surface for 3 days after application.
- Add Krystol KIM to the concrete at 1.5% on weight of cement and fly ash
content (generally 5 kg/m3).
- Water content should be reduced by 10-12 % to compensate for increased
slump caused by KIM addition.
- Apply Krystol T1 slurry at 1 kg/m2 to construction joints,
bed joints etc with a nylon bristle brush.
- Applied to In-Situ Structure
- To the positive or negative side of walls or the surface of slabs, apply
one coat of Krystol T1 slurry with a nylon bristle brush or broom at 0.8
kg/m2, followed as soon as possible by one coat of Krystol T2
slurry at 0.8 kg/m2.
NOTE
Krystol products are highly alkaline. Use rubber gloves, protective eyewear and prevent bare skin from contact.
Coverage
Coverage will vary according to type of application.
Packaging
Krystol products are supplied in 25 kg packs as well as 5 kg and 2.5kg for repairs.
Shelf Life
Unopened or resealed containers of Krystol products stored in a dry, cool place have a shelf life of 2 years.
Clean-up
Remove uncured Krystol with water.
