Darmatt J120 has been specifically developed to satisfy requirements for a flexible passive fire protection system to withstand jet fire and blast overpressure conditions.
Darmatt J120 is based on the company's standard Darmatt flexible mattress system widely developed over 20 years in the petrochemical, offshore and power generation markets for the protection of power and signal cables, valves, actuators, vessels, pipework and other safety critical equipment.
Darmatt J120 is a fully compliant product, certificated by both Lloyds and DNV, and successfully tested to meet the following client requirements:-
Darmatt J120 can be installed as part of a retrofit programme utilising minimum space requirements.
Darmatt J120 can be easily removed and re-installed during equipment maintenance or inspection periods.
Darchem Engineering recognises that requirements vary from industry to industry and adopts procedures designed to accommodate specific customer and industry standards.
Darchem Engineering has a flexible resource capability across the range of Engineering disciplines which enables its Management to provide a dedicated team to meet the specific demands of a Project.

DARMATT is a flexible composite mattress system featuring multiple layers of ceramic fibre at various densities. The composite is compressed to approximately half its free thickness and held in compression with nylon pins. The specific composite for each application is dependant upon the time / temperature requirements, geometry and mass of the protected equipment, and site conditions such as ambient temperature, fuel sources, air flow etc.
Our Lloyds approved Thermal Transient Programme addresses each of these variables to determine the optimum solution. The sacrificial exterior layer is usually either vinyl-coated polyester of a coated fibreglass cloth, depending on environmental and process conditions. In a fire this fabric outer cover burns off, the nylon pins melt and release, allowing the composite to expand, increasing the insulating effect of the fibre.
DARMATT has a high resistance to corrosion and vibration and shows no deterioration of performance throughout intended life span. The flexibility of the DARMATT material facilitates installation on restricted clearance areas and allows installation on existing equipment. Enclosures are supported by the equipment itself or by a supplementary frame.
The installed weight of DARMATT products is 1.8 to 3.5 lb/sq. ft. depending on the fire protection criteria.

DARMATT J120 JET FIRE FLEXIBLE PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
DARMATT J120 is a recognised world leader in the design, development, manufacture and installation of Passive Fire Protection Systems for the offshore industry.
Darchem have developed a well proven DARMATT flexible fireproofing system which has successfully passed a 2 hour jet fire and 1.62 bar blast overpressure tests.
The system DARMATT J120 is based on the company’s standard DARMATT mattress widely used in the petrochemical, offshore and power generation markets for the protection of electrical cables and related safety critical plant equipment such as ESD Valves, actuators, vessels and pipework.
The tests were carried out in March 1995 at Sintef NBL, the Norwegian Fire Research Institute, located near Trondheim, and were witnessed by Lloyds and DNV. The test was developed by the Jet Fire Working Group, a consortium of test houses including Sintef, to simulate a pressurised gas fire of the type that could occur on an oil platform. The jet flame in the test had a flux of 300Kw/m˛ and impinges the sample at a speed approaching sonic velocity.
Blast overpressure test was carried out at the Fire Research Establishment at Cardington in the UK. Blast overpressures of 0.42 bar, 1.12 bar and 1.62 bar were carried out to the satisfaction of the certifying authority to prove suitability of the DARMAT J120 under direct blast and drag conditions.
DARMATT J120 is believed to be the first flexible fire protection product on the market to pass a physical 2 hour jet fire test.
DARMATT J120 is a flexible composite mattress system constructed with both a varying number of layers and density using ceramic or other fibres. An outer layer of stainless steel mesh is fitted that serves to protect against the effects of hydrocarbon jet fire (the standard DARMATT will not have the mesh fitted). The specific composite for each project is dependant upon the time / temperature requirements, site conditions for each localised configuration, the thermal mass of the materials being protected, local fuel sources, air flow and a number of other variables. The sacrificial exterior layer is usually either a vinyl coated polyester of a coated fibreglass cloth, depending on environmental and process conditions. In a fire this fabric outer cover burns off, the nylon pins melt and release, allowing the composite to expand, increasing the insulating effect of the fibre.
DARMATT J120 is a fully compliant product, certified by both Lloyds and DNV and successfully meets the following requirements:
